PASSPORTS AND VISAS
Visitors require visas to enter Tanzania. It is advisable to obtain visas at the Embassy in advance prior to departure. However, the visa can also be obtained on arrival at all point of entry. The fee for a visa is $100.00 cash. The requirements to obtain a visa, you must have a passport, valid for at least six months prior to expiration date. The transit visa in Kenya is $50.00.
SECURITY
Tanzania has a reputation for being a peaceful country. The citizens are very friendly and welcoming to guests
IMMUNIZATION AND HEALTH
Make sure you visit your doctor a month prior to your departure to Tanzania to get a prescription for the malaria pills. All visitors are advised to take anti-malaria pills before and when on safari. Visitors who are arriving from countries where yellow fever is an epidemic will need to have a Certificate of Vaccination for yellow fever. For those travellers arriving from the USA or Europe, yellow fever vaccination is not required when entering Tanzania. Your doctor may recommend taking typhoid, hepatitis A & B, meningitis and tetanus shots but it is not mandatory. Since we are overnight in Kenya, a certificate of vaccination for yellow fever is a must. ( KAISER or public health clinics should have a certificate of vaccination for yellow fever )
LANGUAGE
English is the second language and is widely spoken but a few words of the Swahili language are always appreciated.
CURRENCY
Tanzanian currency is called the shilling. Most major currencies such as US dollars and Euros are accepted and can be easily converted at banks, hotels, lodges and bureau de change in the main towns. DO NOT CHANGE MONEY ON THE STREET. Credit cards are also accepted at all the hotels lodges and a few other establishments. The Standard Charted Bank and Barclay’s bank have ATM machines for you to withdraw cash by using your debit or your visa card. It is imperative to call your credit card companies or your bank to notify them that you will be travelling overseas and the length of your stay.
CLIMATE
In the coastal area, the temperature is hot and humid and the area near Mt Kilimanjaro has cool mornings and nights. The short rainy season is during the months of November to mid-December, and long rains occur during the months of March to May.
ON SAFARI
Traveling by road from one national park to another can be exhausting. We are planning to spend more time in fewer parks. You will see more and you will be able to enjoy your safari without being exhausted when you return home. You will need a converter to use the local electrical system.
Tipping: It is customary to tip the tour guides $20.00 per day. Tip other people at your discretion.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Bring your cameras, batteries, chargers and protect your cameras from dust and keep your equipment and film in a secure bag. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing local people.
CLOTHES
Pack light washable clothes. Bring a light jacket or sweater for the early morning drive. In the National Parks, the weather; It gets cold in the mornings because of high elevation, and during the day it gets warm. Long sleeve blouses or a shirt in light colours with trousers is a must in the national park to discourage insect bites. You do not need to go shopping for a safari trip. It is wise to bring an old pair of jeans or comfortable pants and your old pair of comfortable shoes because it gets dusty. At the end of your journey, you can donate those clothes to the hotel staff. do not apply perfume or any kind of body spray. It will attract insects. You should also bring a few nice casual clothes for dinner time. ( for women a black skirt or a pair of pants with a nice top or a blouse. A Man should bring a pair of slacks with a causal nice Shirt.) in Zanzibar bring your summer clothes.
